Travel and tourism are the integral parts of the Myrtle Beach area economy, encompassing more than 57,000 jobs in our area. While some of the small businesses that are members of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce aren’t tourism dependent, we find that a strong majority of our over 2,800 member investors rely on the millions that visit the Myrtle Beach area year-over-year.

Myrtle Beach Area CVB Annual Report for 2019

The success of the Myrtle Beach area as a premiere beach destination is inspiring and it’s our partners who help make this success a reality each day. The Myrtle Beach area’s tourism industry continues to grow and sets new records each year. The numbers tell the story – in 2018, 20.4 million people visited the destination and generated $10.8 billion in expenditures, up 4% and 7% year over year respectively. While we won’t have 2019 numbers until spring 2020, our tax collections indicate strong year over year growth, including a 10% increase for TDF through October.

In the school start date debate, many have tried to pit the tourism industry and the coast against teachers, parents and students. The fact is that South Carolina parents simply do not want to see the school start-date moved sooner into August. A statewide poll found that nearly 75 percent of parents support the current school start-date (third Monday in August) or would even like to see it moved back later into August or September like many other states.

When proponents of Interstate 73 talk about our area’s need for interstate access, it’s easy to focus on the obvious economic benefits, but the interstate will also bring much needed diversification to our tourism-based economy, with more year-round jobs for residents. It will also boost our tourism industry by 7.1 percent, which translates into an additional $909.9 million direct tourism spending in the Myrtle Beach area.

Much Needed Reforms Coming to Automatic Stay Proceedings

South Carolinians have grown accustom to waiting years, sometimes decades, for infrastructure projects to become a reality. The timeline from when a new road concept is designed to when the first car drives on the fresh asphalt is long, complex and redundant. It doesn’t have to be this way. We can balance growth and new infrastructure projects with protecting precious natural resources in a timely manner. This past Spring, the South Carolina General Assembly and Governor McMaster did just that by passing S 105 into law. This legislation, known as “automatic stay reform,” will help pave the way for new infrastructure projects to move forward in a timely fashion, while giving appropriate legal consideration to environmental concerns.
